Disneyland has so many food options it is unbelievable, many of which have become famous at the parks. The churros, beignets, ice cream bars, corn dogs, Mint Juleps, the Matterhorn macaroon and more. But of all the food options at Disneyland, I would say one of the most famous things is the Monte Cristo Sandwich. You can find this at Cafe Orleans and at Blue Bayou (only for lunch) in New Orleans Square.
The Monte Cristo is a turkey, ham and swiss sandwich that is dredged in batter then deep fried and dusted with powdered sugar that you then dip in a berry purée. It is the perfect combination of sweet and savory and will definitely fill you up. If you haven’t had a Monte Cristo from Disneyland, you have to try one!
Now I will say I have personally had the Monte Cristo sandwich from Cafe Orleans and it was good, but it is a bit heavy. I didn’t even get close to finishing the whole thing, but I still really enjoyed the flavor.
Now I have tried a number of different recipes of the Monte Cristo at home. All have been good, but they can be extremely time consuming and a major pain in the butt to cook, especially if you don’t have a deep fryer. And I just don’t want to commit that much time and effort to making them.
Of all the ways I have tried with the Monte Cristo and all the various recipes I have tried, I finally came up with an easier way to make them that doesn’t take a huge amount of time, and that’s in the form of sliders! These sliders also aren’t quite as heavy as a regular Monte Cristo because they aren’t deep fried and it’s easy to make a bunch of them at one time which makes them a great option for a get together.
This recipe is also really easy to tweak based on how many people you are feeding, if you only have 2 or 3 people half the recipe, or double it if you’ve got a large gathering. You could also use these as a meal with other options or even as an appetizer at a party.
Quick & Easy Monte Cristo Sliders
Ingredients
- 1 package King's Hawaiian Rolls (12 count)
- 1/2 lb sliced deli turkey
- 1/2 lb sliced deli ham
- 6 slices swiss cheese (square slices)
- Dijon mustard
- 1 egg (optional)
- 1/4 cup melted butter (optional)
- Powdered sugar
- Berry preserves or jam
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°. Line a 9×13 pan with parchment paper.
- Using a serrated bread knife, slice the King's Hawaiian Rolls in half, so you have the top half and the bottom half; do not separate each individual roll because they need to stay intact.
- Spread a light skiff of dijon mustard on the top half of the rolls.
- Now build the sliders. Start with a layer or two of sliced ham, then one or two layers of the sliced turkey, and top with a layer of swiss cheese. Top it off with the top half of the rolls.
- In a small bowl, combine the melted butter and egg. Brush the mixture over the top of the sliders. (If you are short on time, you can skip the egg wash and bake them without it, it's still delicious!)
- Cover the pan with aluminum foil, making sure the foil doesn't touch the tops of the sliders.
- Bake in 350° oven for 15 minutes. Remove the foil from the pan and cook for another 10 minutes, or until the tops of the sliders are golden.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the sliders apart and dust with powdered sugar.
- To serve, place two rolls on a plate with berry preserves and grapes on the side. Dip and enjoy warm!
Notes
This recipe is great if you are busy and don’t have a lot of time to cook dinner one night. Or, if you’re like me and just don’t want to cook sometimes. It only has a few ingredients and cleanup is a breeze!
I hope you love this recipe as much as I do!
