WHAT YOU’LL NEED
First, gather all your ingredients. Luckily, this won’t require an extra trip to the grocery store because these are all basics that you probably already have in your kitchen. Here’s what you’ll need:
• Water
• Butter
• Salt
• Cinnamon
• Flour
• Sugar
• Vegetable or canola oil
• Piping bag and large star piping tip
HOW TO MAKE CHURROS
First, start by combining the water, butter, salt, and 1/4 tsp cinnamon in a pan and bring it to a rolling boil.
Once the mixture has reached a rolling boil, reduce the heat to low.
Next, you need to add the flour and stir vigorously. I used a spatula to do this because it’s a really thick dough when it comes together and I didn’t want it getting stuck in a whisk.
Once the dough forms a ball, you need to remove it from the heat and let it sit for 5-7 minutes.
While the dough is resting, grab a large bowl and combine the sugar and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Make sure your bowl is big enough for your churros to lay in the bottom of it so they can get evenly coated.
After the dough has sat, it’s time to finish the dough. Add the eggs one and a time, making sure to mix each egg in completely before adding the next. I tried mixing this with both a spatula and a whisk and I can honestly say the spatula works better. It takes a minute to get the eggs incorporated with a spatula but the whisk just holds all the dough inside and doesn’t mix it well.
This is what your dough should look like when it’s done.
Next, you need to get your dough into a piping bag. Put the largest star tip you have in the bag and put the bag in a glass to make it easier to spoon the dough into it. You should also heat your oil at this point over medium high heat. If you don’t have a thermometer, you can sprinkle some water in the oil. If it splatters and bubbles, it’s ready for the churros.
Now it’s time to drop the churros in.
If you are using a large tip, you can do smaller churros. But my tip wasn’t very big so I decided to pipe out churros that were a little bit longer. Once you’ve piped out as much as you want, use a knife or kitchen scissors to cut off the dough.
I did three or four churros at a time so I had room to fry them. You also don’t want to add too many because it will cool your oil down. But I actually ended up lowering my oil to medium heat to do mine.
Once the churros are golden brown, you want to take them out using a slotted spoon, tongs, or a spider strainer. Put some paper towels on a plate to place the churros on so they can drain the oil off of them.
Once the churros are drained but still warm, roll them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture. I used tongs which kept my hands from being an absolute mess.
And voila! You have delicious Disney churros right in your own home. Eat when warm and serve with your favorite dipping sauces, eat them plain, or try to recreate other churro flavors like fluffernutter!
