Spooky season is here and I cannot wait! Fall is my absolute favorite time of year and October is by far my favorite month. With it comes warm sweaters, crisp air, beautiful colors, leaf piles, pumpkin patches, hot chocolate, pumpkin cookies, but my most favorite part of all is Halloween! And more importantly, decorating for Halloween!
I love adding touches of Disney to my Halloween decor when I can so I decided to recreate the Poison Apple from Snow White. If youβve seen the movie, you know exactly what Iβm talking about.
When the evil queen dips the apple into the poison it comes out with the poison dripping off of it and it looks like a skull. So iconic! Every Halloween Disney incorporates this image into a lot of things like mugs, candy jars, candle holders, popcorn buckets, treats, and of course their delicious caramel apples! So I decided to make my own poison apple to display on my mantle. This is such a quick and easy project it wonβt take up too much of your time so let’s get started.

What you’ll need
β’ Sharp pencil
β’ Hot glue gun and glue sticks
β’ Craft paint- I used green, I wish I had used more shades and incorporated a dark green to add more dimension
β’ Clear gloss
Creating your Poison Apple
Step 1– Draw the face
Using a sharp pencil, lightly trace the skull shape onto the apple. I only drew the eyes and nose, I didnβt take the time to draw and drips coming down the apple. Draw lightly so you can erase if necessary and be careful not to puncture the apple as you go.
Step 2– Outline with hot glue
Using a hot glue gun, go over the lines you traced to create a barrier between where the hot glue will be applied and the areas that need to be left as is. I recommend using a smaller hot glue gun so that you can control it more easily.
Step 3– Add the “poison”
Once you have your pattern traced, cover the rest of the apple in hot glue. I started by going around the face and worked my way around the apple. You will need to go in sections because the hot glue will dry faster than you can cover the whole thing. I only put the hot glue about halfway down the apple so that it would drip down and create the look I wanted. Some drips will be longer than others and thatβs exactly how you want it. You will have to use a decent amount of glue at a time to get the drips to come down like this.
I repeated this step three times to create mine because I wanted more definition between the poison and the apple. You can do one, two, or three layers, it just depends on how much depth you want. I wouldnβt recommend doing more than 3 because it gets really heavy. Just make sure every layer is dry before you start adding more glue. Also, you may have some uneven areas in the hot clue or see divots or creases and thatβs okay. Itβs just how the hot glue dries. If it bothers you, you could use the side of the tip of the glue gun to reheat the glue slightly and smooth it out a bit.
Step 4– Base coat of paint
Cover the hot glue in off white paint. Try to get it all into any grooves in the glue and around the edges. I did one coat as a base layer so I didnβt have to use as much green paint later. If you like the look of the poison being white, you can skip the next step.
Step 5– Make it spooky
Using a bright green paint, go over the hot glue again. Really take the time to get into all the cracks and creases in the glue and make sure itβs fully covered. Pro tip: if any paint gets onto the apple, use a wet Q tip to get it off and use the dry end to clean it up. I did two layers of green paint to cover up any sparse areas from the first coat. If you want to add more dimension, once the apple is dry, go over it again with a darker green shade of paint to give it more depth and dimension.
Step 6– Polish up that apple
I didnβt like the look of the dry paint and I wanted it to look like it was wet and dripping so I got some clear coat spray paint and put a coat over the entire apple. Make sure the apple is completely dry before doing this step and spray in a well ventilated area.
Now time for the finished product.
Ta da! One poison apple coming right up!
Thatβs it! Youβre done! Super easy and quick and now you have a beautiful poison apple to display that looks just like the one from Snow White! It’s the perfect way to add Disney to your spooky season decor while still keeping it, well spooky.
